Fremont Bank and The Sharks Foundation are excited to present the Fremont Bank Reading Is Cool program!
Fremont Bank Reading Is Cool is a free literacy program open to all K-6 grade public school classes in Santa Clara County and Southern Alameda County (Newark, Fremont, and Union City). By incorporating unique incentives and encouraging family involvement, it promotes the importance of reading to students, both at home and in the classroom.
This program is designed for individual classrooms and runs from October 2007 through April 2008. Every teacher who registers will be provided:
§ Seven (7) “Top Reader of the Month” medals (one for each month of the program)
§ A “Top Reader of the Year” medal
§ Bookmarks for each student in the class
§ Participation Certificates for each student in the class
§ A program poster for display in the classrooms
§ A “Reading Log” poster to track students’ progress
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Each month students record the books they read. Medals are given to each classrooms' Reader of the Month and Top Reader of the Year.
TOP READER NIGHT AT HP PAVILION AT SAN JOSE Near the end of the year, the top readers from each classroom are entered into a drawing to win a penthouse suite pizza party at a Sharks home game. Click here for more information.
S.J. SHARKIE’S MONTHLY TOP TEN CLASSROOMS VISITS Each month S.J. Sharkie visits the top performing classrooms to reward them for their great work and donate books for use in their school’s library. Click here for more information.
S.J. SHARKIE’S MONTHLY READ-INS SJ Sharkie and San Jose Sharks staff visit two K-3rd grade classrooms each month to read grade-appropriate books. Classrooms are selected at random and all registered K-3rd grade classrooms are eligible. Click here to see a video recap from a recent Read-In.
CELEBRITY STORY HOURS Several times throughout the season current Sharks players join a member of the Sharks broadcast team to read books to children. This portion of the program is open and free to the general public.
CHILDREN'S BOOK DRIVES This year drives will take place on Jan. 17 (vs. Dallas) and Jan. 19 (vs. Detroit). All drives occur at the North and South Entrances of HP Pavilion before the start of designated home games. Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used children’s books that will be donated to Bay Area elementary school libraries during monthly Read-Ins and Top Ten Classroom visits. All donors will be provided with a raffle ticket for a drawing held that night to win autographed Sharks items.
PRIVATE PRACTICES AT SHARKS ICE AT SAN JOSE Each month the Sharks will designate one practice for a special Fremont Bank Reading Is Cool day. This practice will be closed to the general public. Included in the day will be a hockey-related lesson and handout highlighting the importance of reading, ability to watch the entire Sharks practice, participate in a Q&A with two Sharks players, and ice skate during a public session. All 4th-6th grade registered classes are eligible for this component and classrooms will be selected at random.
Registration for 2008- 09 begins September 19, 2008. Please check back at that time.
