S.J. Sharkie Set To Join 2009 NHL All-Stars

The National Hockey League announced today that Sharks mascot S.J. Sharkie has been named as a Western Conference All-Star Mascot.  He will be representing the San Jose Sharks at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game in Montreal on Jan. 25. 

Sharkie joins Sharks players Joe Thornton (forward) and Dan Boyle (defenseman) for the Trip to Montreal, and looks to also join Todd McLellan, who in on target to be named head coach of the Western Conference All-Star team. 

This will be the 12th career NHL All-Star appearance for Sharkie.

Sharkie will depart following the Sharks v. Canucks game on Jan. 20, and report to the Western Conference host hotel in Montreal on Jan. 21 to begin his duties as a representative of the Sharks.  Sharkie will have a busy Thursday and Friday, as the days will be filled with community events, fan festivities and rehearsals.  Friday night will allow for a good nights sleep to prepare him for the busy All-Star weekend.

Sharkie’s Saturday will begin with an early morning arena arrival, followed by interacting with the fans during the East and West open practice.  During the open practice event, this year fans will be treated to a Mascot Exhibition Hockey Game.  After a well deserved afternoon off, Sharkie will return to the arena on Saturday night for the Honda / NHL Super Skills competition. 

This years competition will include the best players in the NHL competing in the breakaway challenge (trick shots), fastest skater, accuracy shooting, hardest shot and elimination shootout.  Also included that night will be the Young Stars Game putting the top freshman vs. the top sophomores from around the league.

If you are not able to find Sharkie on Thursday, Friday or even Saturday, check the Versus network at 3 p.m. (pacific) for the live broadcast of the 2009 NHL All Star Game.

“I am extremely excited to once again represent the Sharks at this great event,” said Sharkie. “Even with all the appearances and the hard work, it is turns out to be a really a fun weekend, and I look forward to exposing the fans of Montreal to Sharkie.  I know I will enjoy seeing some of the other mascots as well.  It will be a time for us to shine.”

The Western Conference All-Star Mascots also include Anaheim’s Wild Wing, Columbus’ Stinger, LA’s Bailey, Nashville’s Gnash, and Vancouver’s Fin.
